Story: Baden is one of the best resorts in Austria. Known since the time of the Roman Empire under the name of the Baths of Pannoniki (lat. Thermae Pannonicae). Hot sulfur springs were used by the Romans (lat. Itinerarium Antonini). In total, there are fifteen springs in Baden, thirteen of which are warm, thanks to which the city got its name. The temperature of the warm spring water is between 22°C and 36°C, and its key ingredient is calcium sulfate. The springs, which are used mainly for bathing, are mainly located at the foot of the Calvarienberg mountain (German: Calvarienberg, about 326 m), composed of dolomitic limestone.
Before the First World War, Baden was the main resort of Austria, about 20,000 tourists came here every year to the waters. Among the celebrities is Ludwig van Beethoven, who lived here in the summer in 1803-1825 and visited the thermal springs and drank mineral water. Now in Baden you can visit his museum.
The city smells of hydrogen sulfide, especially near Romerterme and the Casino in the building of the Kursaal, in the basement of which you can see a well with clear bluish water. This is the Roman source (Romerquelle).
The city has the Arnulf Rainer Museum in the building of the former Frauenbad baths. This building was built in 1821 on the site of the Frauenkirche church that burned down in 1812, designed by Charles de Moro, one of the leading architects of French classicism. In 1973, the baths were no longer used and now they are being renovated. There are two swimming pools and dressing rooms, which are used as exhibition space.
There are several other buildings of former baths in Baden: Josefsbad, which now houses a cafe, Franzensbad with a Turkish hammam, but the water is not thermal, and others. The photographs show some of the old bath buildings and their modern appearance.
